Persian Rug?
« on: January 04, 2015, 02:33:50 pm »
Hello Everyone!

I have recently acquired this beautiful rug and need some help identifying it.  It is 8' 5" Wide and 12' Long and about an 1" thick.  I'm not sure what other information would be helpful so please ask and I will be happy to answer.

Thanks!

Well,, I do not see the exact even lines of a machine made rug so its possibly hand tied !! Nice even fade like natural dyes !! Its certainly worth getting a look from a good rug merchant or two !! Just do not sell if they want to buy it !!

The knot appear to be small and tight and wool. The dyes look right. The center medallion and the surrounding field look right too as do many of the smaller designs. It is not Turkish or Caucasian so that leaves me to be 90 percent sure it is Persian and a good one. The age is hard to determine but it appears to be hand woven. They still make rugs like that. I was looking at some over the holidays in a store. They are expensive if new and off the chart if antique. My gut is you have a good rug there.I am not an expert which is what you need.  Mart is right. Years ago I went to New York with someone to sell oriental rugs. The different answers that were given were really all over the place, Even Park Bernet came up with conflicting information. Beware of rug merchants. Does it fly? lol Here is a quick guide https://creativebuzzing.wordpress.com/2010/06/07/how-to-quickly-identify-oriental-rugs/

I have heard others say the same thing Frogpatch !! They give a, not worth much, estimate and offer to take it off your hands !!  Then sell it at much higher price !!Some of these rugs can bring into the thousands !!  How many depends on the rug !!

I sat on it for quite a long time trying to get it to fly with no luck.   ;D
I have arranged to meet with a local rug merchant on Saturday to get some more information.  I will keep you guys posted with the results.

So I took the rug down to a local dealer yesterday.  It is a Bijar rug which is a city in Iran.  These (Bijar) rugs were hand made in India with all natural dyes.  This particular style with the medallion in the middle were made from the early 70's to the mid 90's and the approximate value, this size, is from $1,800 to $2,400.  The guy was really nice and never offered to buy it.  He said I should keep it for myself because everyone should have a nice rug in their house.

Thanks for the help guys!
