SP Dresden?
« on: February 22, 2015, 09:16:01 am »
Hello everyone!

I'm brand new here and have to be honest; I know nothing about antiques! I found this ornate bowl & lid set when I was clearing out my mother's attic when she passed away last year. I've asked around in Antique dealerships but find that as I am 24 and clearly know very little about the item I have been quoted many different prices, ranging from £9 to £250...

The box is in seemingly in mint condition; all the gold paintwork is fully intact and there are no cracks or chips in the porcelain. I've been told it was made between 1901 and 1914.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance x

I have no idea about the mark. I think this might be called a potpourri with a reticulating cover.

I think your little box was made by Dresden China Co. Liverpool, Ohio !!  It does not have "Germany" to indicate  it was made in that area !! And it is not painted in the Dresden, Germany style !!

Thank you for your replies :) the SP I have found stands for Saxon Porcelain and the logo is that of the Dresden Porcelain factory in Germany, likely made by Karl August Kuntzsch after the death of founder Carl Thieme.

I am hoping to take the item to an antiques valuation in March; its a fascinating little piece and I have not found one like it anywhere. It's such a shame I have no way of finding out where, when or why my Mother purchased it.

The logo search led me to the Dresden website, where they still make fine porcelain today! They temporarily closed in 1914 due to the war and when they re-opened, the logo changed. Similarly, the logo prior to 1902 was the Dresden signature painted by the founder Carl Thieme. So that goes with my initial information of the piece being made between these 2 dates.

My Mother resided in the Cotswolds, UK and I am based in South Wales. It may be worth absolutely nothing; but knowing my Mother she probably picked it up for 50 pence at a boot sale (she was a sucker for a bargain!) As I said, I cannot find anything similar to it online and have had estimates from £9 to £250 so you never know. I just can't believe I own something so beautiful and in such wonderful condition that is over 100 years old!
