I guess what we are proving here is that while pictures are helpful, they will never completely replace the hands-on experience. Another thing that the photos do not show is that the patina on the metal parts is so thick that it is tactile: you can actually feel it. It has the texture of fine-grit sandpaper. It feels a bit like rust, but this is not iron or steel.

Brass should not feel like that unless it has had some type of finish applied or possibly if it was exposed to salt water and I am not sure about that !!

I am comfortable with majority opinion on the subject. Would be delighted to see more research on it though, no matter how it skews. This item definitely wins the prize for "Most Obscure Item" in my collection. Granted, obscure does not necessarily mean valuable, but how many other things can you look up on the Internet, with all its connections, and find fewer than 3 other examples?

I am quite comfortable with that too.

Its really an odd one !!  Will make a good conversation piece !!   Nice find whatever it is !!
