I have a full dinner set for 12 including a tea set and a soup tureen the stamp on the back is Hutschenreuther Arzberg Bavaria Germany Iris .On top of that marking is  the number 1840 with an oval inside is Mayer Wiesau (as afar as I can read it) with a crown. You probably need to go to replacements.com and ask them for a quote !! Selling an entire set is difficult on the sale sites like ebay !!

Do you know the date the set was manufactured? Also what does the markings in the oval stand for above the Hutschenreuther mark?

According to the site "Porcelain Marks & More" Image 3-06 (our good friend Chris' site) this mark was used between 1928 and 1963.  http://www.porcelainmarksandmore.com/germany/bavaria/arzberg-01/index.php

Your pattern is "Iris".

As for the other mark - it is for Mayer Wiesau Factory in Bavaria.  This was a factory claimed to have started in 1840 stopped during the war and resumed after the war.  The only references to it are here:  http://www.efineantiques.com/webpages/fine_porcelains.htm

Maybe someone who can figure this one out can tell me why 2 factories are listed on this one! ?  !  ?  !

According to PM&M the usual reason, for the double backstamp is because they were re-decorated by the second company !! This one has a gold border and that is possibly what was added later and was stamped again by MW !!  I saw other marks done the same way with different mfrs stamp !! The Iris Series was made between 1945 and 1949 according to his site !!

 Does the 1840 mark relate to the year Mayer Wiesau company began doing business?

If it is included in the mark that's usually when the company was started !!  Anywhere else on the back can be a shape or style number !!

That is part of their "makers mark" that they chose to include the date of origin!  Ditto for what Mart put!

You need to look up each piece individually and see what people are actually paying for them !! Serving pieces must be researched piece by piece !! Even when you do that,, selling as a set will be difficult and you likely will not get as much as selling piece by piece !!  Again,, one of the replacement companies would buy as a set but at about half or less its approx. value !! Patterns like this are not very popular !!  Most sales are to people that need a specific piece to replace a broken one in a set they own !!
