Unusual lobster /crab
« on: April 28, 2016, 11:42:37 am »
Does anyone have any information on this.  They are two seperate items but I bought them together.  They look to be very old.  I think the bigger one is a lobster or similar?  It looks like it could be some sort of hook maybe?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The larger item measures 2 inches in length.

The one (lobster) definitely looks like a door/wall hook - but no hole for mounting?

The other one...hmmmmm

The larger one most likely represents a scorpion, …… me thinks.  ;)

Cool little finds , Hap/chap .... I'm curious as to the type of metal these items are made of .

The scorpion was often associated with persons of 'high rank'  in many Pre-Columbian societies ... the spiral legs are also something that has been associated with shaman .
Often the scorpion was displayed as a pectoral piece .

Your items both seem to be sand-cast , according to what I think I am seeing in the pics .

Does the inside of the small piece have any blackening in it such as "soot" from a candle?

Just for grins, could the bottom "loop" on the small cup shaped piece fit over the "hooked" section of the stand and hang?

I don't know why, but the small "cup" item makes me think of a spinal column.

How big are they ??  I thought at first they looked like they came off of a charm bracelet !!  Is there a rough area on the  tail like a loop was broken off !!

Mart, he/she stated the scorpion was 2 inches in length.

They look to me to be made of un-refined copper ….. and they could be quite old. ;) ;)

And if they are extremely old then they would be “handmade” ….. and not molded.

Hey, they just announced the finding of 10+- amphoras of Roman coins in Spain, circa 3rd century AD.

Thanks so much for all your help everyone; a great response.

You are all definitely correct about it being a scorpion.  I was actually very dubious about it being a lobster but nothing else was coming to mind.  I tried hooking the other item on the tail and it does not go.  Obviously I have very limited experience on this kind of item but to me, it looks and feels very old and hand made.

Mart, sorry bout that, I shudda posted a link. Anyway, to wit:

Workers unearth large trove of Roman coins at Spanish park

Published April 30, 2016  Associated Press

MADRID –  Workers laying pipes in a southern Spanish park have unearthed a 1,300-pound trove of Roman coins in what culture officials say is a unique historic discovery.

The Seville Archaeological Museum said the construction workers came across 19 amphoras containing thousands of bronze and silver-coated coins dating from the end of the fourth century. The coins are believed to have been recently minted at the time and had probably been stored away to pay soldiers or civil servants.

They were purchased in a collection of items from an auction house.
