Antique dining/kitchen table
« on: July 21, 2016, 11:38:37 am »
This is my table and just wanted to find out more about it. This came from my father's side of the family and all I know is that it's 100+ years old.

This looks like a quarter-sawn oak pedestal dining table with Empire revival stylings. Very nice grain on the table top indicating high quality oak. If it's over 100 years old its not much over; I'd say 1910-1920. Around here a table such as this one might bring $300-$400 under the right circumstances.

A karma point to you as a new member for bringing such beautiful things to our forum!

I'm not sure about the age...just know it's over a 100 years old. That's where I spent my life eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. I've thought about getting rid of it because it's just too big for my breakfast room, but have mixed emotions and can't decide.
Thanks for the point...I'm feeling special.😀

Yeah, agrees, it was most likely made in the golden age of oak (1900-1920), this style is sometimes referred to as empire revival.

lol, yep, that's what it is alright. Period empire only lasted a short while (1790-1820) but the empire style went on for the entire 19th century and into the 20th century, basically 100 years, long time. It is sometimes called pillar & scroll, late classical as well as empire revival. It has the sames lines/form as period empire, just none of the elaborate decorations of period empire.

Ditto!

We had one similar and I was going to get rid of it as well - so large and heavy.  BUT, held on to it and it came in handy because my youngest son just moved out and we were able to furnish his whole place with family furniture!
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!
