Old sewing chest?
« on: July 25, 2016, 06:08:02 pm »
I bought this today and I think it may be some kind of old sewing chest ...maybe used to house a sewing machine .
Someone had attached something to the top that looked like you would clean fish on it. lol.
Any ideas. And what would you suggest that I do about the top. It also has a pull out shelf that looks like you could use it to write on and the knobs turn to open on the doors.

Could you take some photos from a bit further out? I'm having a hard time conceptualizing the whole.

Thanks. The proportions look like 1940s, which I know you like. I'm not getting a feeling for sewing; rather, it looks like it might be associated with dining room furniture, like a server. Not sure though. You could get a piece of walnut cut and stained to match for the top, or even a piece of marble.

Well I should have explained and taken a pic...the reason I thought maybe a sewing chest was what was under the contraption they put on top...it had 2 openings and the wood it was attached to looked as though it belonged to the table...but with that being said...I completely see what you are saying about a server (now that you've mentioned it lol). That would also make more sense as to why it is on casters.
Do you know if the top would have come just to the edges or would have overlapped the body of the piece? Thanks

It t'was a server.

The original top most probably was a slab of marble.

So, replace the marble top and it will again be a server, ….. like so:

Cheers

Now something like this needs to be revamped !!  It would make a nice bar !!  Set the liquor on top with the glasses and when in use pull out for the mixing surface,, close it up when not in use !! Couple of shelves in the lower part for napkins and extra`s !!

Great piece, I can imagine the drawers been filled with silver cutlers and it been present in a large lavish estate.
