Art Glass Bud Vase
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:49:51 am »
I don't have much information on this. It's a family piece and may date to the 1920s, and it may be from Italy (Murano glass). It's 6.5 inches tall, 2 inches wide at the widest, and has a ground pontil on the bottom. The impressed marks in the silver collar are very difficult to read, but I tried anyway, under bright light and the best magnification I could find. Here's my guess: The four characters on the left are "J T I S." The three on the right appear to be pictographs and are virtually impossible to read. My guess is that they say "I" then a winged horse, then the face of a cat.

So, the usual suspects:

Where is it from?

How old is it?

What's the replacement value?

P.S Oh, and I'm aware that the second photo is blurry. I placed the camera on a hard surface and the image is still slightly blurry; the problem is that it's an old digital but it's the only one that takes photos that this site will accept. My new, super high resolution camera and this site don't get along at all.
P.P.S. I know I won't retire off of this vase. Just looking for info.

Thanks for looking, Mart! Even with magnification, it's just too hard to read.

I'm going to say that it's ca. 1920, replacement value is, maybe, $50.00?

I would say it was from around the 1920's to early 1930's.  There were a few noted glass makers that made silver collared vases at that time - Rindskopf was a big one.  Most are noted having the silver collars from London or Birmingham.  So could your silver collar have a lion passant (sterling) and panther head (London)?  Are you sure about the J T I S?  Could it be J T & S?  Look at the mark for J Thompson & Sons, London

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

I think you're right about J T & S. Well done!! A point for you!! J Thompson & Sons it is. You may also be right about the lion passant and you probably are correct about the panther head. I just can't get enough magnification for those, but the cat sounds right.

So, now we know the silver collar was made in London. As far as the glass goes, Rindskopf didn't exactly match up. I'm still thinking Murano; this may have been purchased on a trip to Italy by one of MsGhopper's relatives in 1924.

It looks like J Thompson & Sons made the collar, and it may have been imported to Italy and set on a Murano bud vase?

Going by what Mart said, insurance should be around $100, with replacement at about $75.00.

Good job and THANK YOU to all of you helpful folks!

I'd dismissed the JT&S possibility due to the firm being in existence before this vase was made. The leopards head might be used with their mark but they were a Sheffield firm, I think.

Just a shame we can't see a clearer photo of the mark.

A quick search noted that J Thompson & Sons were in business from at least 1899 to 1933, so this vase falls right into that range. It looks like they were in London during the later part of their existence.
