I've seen similar styles of this from Royal Copley.
There is no discernible mark on the bottom, so I'm not at all sure this is Royal Copley or a knock-off.

I finally got a reply on the RC Collectors forum.
I thought this info would be helpful to everybody...

This does not appear to be a Royal Copley piece. Some of the characteristics of RC include:
-two or more runners on the bottom, thin rails on the bottom in the case of RC. For reference, only a very few early pieces (small vases mostly) were done with a flat un-glazed bottom.
- paint over top of the glaze. One dead giveaway for a piece of RC is the fact that all paint was done before glazing. If the black paint on your piece is done after the piece was glazed it would indicate another pottery.
RC did a number of oriental themed pieces including planters similar to this and these pieces are often miss-identified as RC in antique malls.

In the 50's there were several potteries that copied RC designs and turned out similar pieces.

My guess is that your piece is an import. RC had an increasing amount of import competition and this became a challenge to RC by the mid-50's and probably contributed to the decision to close Spaulding China in 1957. I'm sure the Webmaster will add comments and he is the resident expert but we have been collecting for over 7 years and so I feel confident the info I'm sharing is accurate.

The piece is lovely and no less important as a part of your family and so I'm sure you will cherish it regardless of origin.

Tell him that not only helps you,, it helps us as well !!  I knew about the bars and Rauville posted it but I did not know that those that were made without them were only vases !!
