What is this thing?
« on: October 20, 2018, 07:44:43 am »
I can't figure out what this piece is. On the bottom there  is a nob that will tighten if you turn it all the way right, and a spring loaded plunger, as if to activate something when you set it down and the plunger is pushed in. If you unscrew the top a bit, you see that the glass has a neck on it and a cork in the top. The glass looks to be sealed on the bottom, just like a bottle more or less. Any ideas?

Anytime I see a “sealed” glass container with a “red” liquid inside ….. I think of a “fire extinguisher”, better known as a “fire grenade”.

Most “fire grenades” were meant to be thrown at the fire, ….. but yours and the ones pictured below seem to be “automatic” that burst open in the presence of a fire.

That is iffen yours is truly a “fire extinguisher”?

Red Comet fire grenades

That's a very logical conclusion. That would explain why it has a cork in the top, but the cork is held down by a cap with a screw in it. Maybe when it gets hot something comes up from the bottom and strikes the glass? It also says "Made in Sweden" on the bottom.

First thing that came to my mind when I saw it was an Eternal flame sanctuary or cemetery light.

That's undoubtedly the same thing. Strange. I guess I've just got a broken music box
