PRIVATE LABEL POCKETWATCH
« on: November 04, 2019, 02:50:39 pm »
Hello. I have what I believe is a private label pocketwatch from the late 1800’s-1900’s. The dial says “Fergensen Watch Co.” on the dial. There are no marks on the back of the works so not sure who made it. Does anyone have info on “Fergensen Watch Co.”? Thanks in advance. Robert

One of the first watch companies in the world, Jules Jergensen was founded in 1740 in Denmark. Throughout the next couple hundred years, they made high-end luxury timepieces until the company was sold in 1970.

Thank you for the info. I clicked on that search but it is only giving me “JERGENSEN” and mine is “FERGENSEN”. I tried putting up a photo but it won’t let me.

Jergensen ...... was all I found.

And given the fact that an original “JERGENSEN” is a high-buck watch, …….. there is a possibility that your “FERGENSEN” is a fake meant to deceive an unsuspecting buyer.

It is not uncommon for reproductions to be "marked" with a known makers name ….. but with a 1 letter misspelling of the name. …… aka: F instead of J

Try "re-sizing" your photo for "E-mail or Web".

Portrait quality photos won't upload …… too many pixels/

Read the above titled "Photo's are important! (info on loading pictures)"

You would need to get it appraised to be sure,

Or search for a "pocket watch collectors forum" …… such as this one, …….

Go to NAWCC website !!  They will know about your watch !!  National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors !!
Are you sure about that spelling ??  Nothing shows  up  with that name,, just Fergusen,, not Fergensen !!

Cogar's first reply brought back memory of several years ago.  A shady looking man walked by my office in a new car dealership, came in, looked both ways and said, "You want to buy a brand new Bulova electric wrist watch for thirty bucks ?" It was in a nice looking box.  I had forgotten my reading glasses that day so called our lot man in and asked him if the name on the watch was Bulova,  Sonny looked at the watch and said, "Yes sir, yes sir, it says Bulova."  Still not convinced I said, "Spell that out for me."  He said, "Yes sir it says B-O-L-I-V-I-A."  Man just put it in his pocket and walked out.   In God We Trust;  all others we check out carefully.

Great lesson for everyone Jondar !! Skepticism is a virtue !!  I look at everything as a fake until I prove it isn`t !!

Unfortunately I look skeptically at many things...but not all.

I think contacting the watch association is a terrific idea.
