East Greek hand-painted vase?
« on: January 14, 2024, 05:24:59 am »
Hello,

I am new to the board and to collecting antiques.
I was in a second-hand shop in Wales, United Kingdom and found this small vase. It measures 6 inches/15cm in height, 6cm diameter at top, about 9.5cm diameter at it's widest.
It's quite light, 241g, and I think it's made of clay.

It's hand-painted and has a semi-erased stamp on the bottom (pictures in link below to gallery). I've figured out the last two words on the stamp say "GEOMETRIK PERIOD", not sure what the previous two bits are though and the middle bit of the stamp is not clear.

From researching it online, I've found that the style of painting is very similar to East Greek vase painting. This Wikipedia page shows an authentic one of similar painting style: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Greek_vase_painting
But from what I can tell, if it was actually geometric period in Greece, it would be extremely old, so not sure if it's authentic. Hoping someone can help me out?

Thanks in advance

Hi there and welcome !!  Your  little vase while nice was likely made as a  tourist item !!  II don`t think they had stamps for the bottom in English during that time period !!
