Moving a mercury barometer
« on: April 16, 2007, 04:44:23 pm »
my family has a 19th century (I think) Swedish barometer, and I've been told that it's very delicate. When my mom moved, we had to walk it the 5 blocks and then walk up the stairs, always doing our best to not shake it or bounce it at all (thus the stairs instead of the elevator). One day, we're going to have to move it again, but this time much farther away than a walk could accomplish. Does anyone have any pointers on what we could do? We will probably have to hire someone to move it, I figure, but how could we make sure (if we could ever be totally sure) that whoemver we hire will take the utmost care?

first thing is wrap it, in bubble wrap. pack it in a box. tighten with newspaper. and write fragile on the box. if the mercury glass breaks it's a couple of hundred dollars to repair.

What DB said...........you can also tape the glass with removable tape. The tape adds strength and rigidity   to the glass. Pack in the same direction as it hangs or sits. Preferably ship it yourself, ie: your own vehicle if possible.
