Can anyone identify this limoges backstamp?
« on: July 09, 2009, 03:14:49 pm »
Hi all, I have a biscuit jar and can't identify the backstamp on it. The closest I've found was a Bawo and Dotter mark, or an Elite limoges mark. Thanks for the help! (The bottom picture is the biscuit jar).

I found your Limoges mark, there is not a lot of info, but they may have more information if you contact them:

Got it for ya! It says it dates 1870-1880. I'm not sure if this is the info you're looking for or not.

Thanks tales, that's actually where I got my name from as well. However, the backstamp is a bit different. I explored their site and found the backstamp again with information of the company, but mine is either earlier or later, and may even be from a completely different maker. I would guess it is just an earlier Bawo and Dotter mark, but I haven't been able to find one.

Actually, this might be it! Mine is a little worn, so I can't make out any detail, but it is red- so probably! Thanks!

It is hard to see in the photo, even zoomed up, what is different on your pottery mark?

I had to put them side by side. Looks like yours is missing the letters at the very top and bottom. Hmmm...

Maybe D&B or Chris will take a look and give their 2cents worth.

There were knockoffs made that were close.....

Well, I really don't think it's a knock-off since it was my great-grandmother's, but it's a possibility I suppose. The differences, as I see them, are as follows:

1.) The "B.D." at the top is missing
2.) There is no "L" under the strange animal-appearing thing :)
3.) Directly above the animal thing is: D A G or something similar. Perhaps it is B & D? The ink is really rather smudged, the E in Limoges is fairly hard to make out as well. This actually may be an earlier piece by Bawo and Dotter, I think they were based in New York and started making limoges in 1860, the other mark doesn't date that early.

A similarity is the fact that they're both red, so this pretty much has me stumped!

Great site tales......, love the name bit hard to write  ;D.  That site may help me a bit on the few pieces of Limoges I have, So many Limoges hallmarks, bit of a swamp to wade though, but you have offered me a bridge,  ::).
