Does anyone know this silverplate mark?
« on: August 15, 2009, 08:37:23 am »
I'm listings some trays on ebay for my mom and I haven't been able to find this silver plate mark online.  It's hard to get a clear picture of the mark so I wrote it out in pencil.  I'm not sure I copied it correctly either- the last part of the mark is hard for me to make out visually.

Any chance that first symbol is a letter C in a circle?

Not familiar with that mark or anything close, (*)  EE would almost should be EP maybe, that would be a guess, and maybe a hard to read Williams.  Could you post a pic of the entire tray that may help a bit.  I also was wandering where the hallmark is on the tray, lookd kinda like on the outer rim, and not the usual bottom.  Then from the pic of the hallmark looks real small, and or maybe a engraving rather then a stamped hallmark, but this could just be bad eyes.

The hallmarks on the back of the tray on the outer rim.  The first marking looks sort of like a crest to me, then there are 2 marks that look like the letter e.  The first e is slightly larger than the 2nd.  The next markings are hard  to make out but it looks like VlPlUU? Here's a photo of the tray itself.  I can take a better photo of the tray if that would be helpful.

Could you post a pic of what the entire piece looks like?

Sure, I'll take some better photos as soon as my brother returns home today with my camera.

I'm not sure without a better shot of the hallmark, I can reference it very well.  If you can get a good shot of  the hallmark that may help.  However from the overall look of the tray really looks vintage 1950's, bascically a item after the silverplate boom and usually made just for Holiday use, which would make it of little value as far as silverplate items go.  So much silverplate out there for cheap, have to have something unique or with what I call exceptional hallmark.  Most silverplate collectors are looking for late 19th century items or items that have lots of embellishments.  Unless we can find the maker your item would not be worth the shipping cost to a collector, I usually see these for around 10 bucks at the thrift stores and 5 buck rummage sales.   Silverplate is everywhere and trays are the bread of the silverplate market.

Yeah, that's sort of what I thought.  My mom has some old pairpoint trays and such, and this really doesn't have the same look to it.  I see lots of vintage silverplate on craigslist and it really goes for almost nothing.
