Restoration all way's affects and antique. done properly it can be and asset. as for the chair. construction details are well hidden. the chair should be heavy to lift. only quality woods were used during the victorian years. I see no harm in changing the upholstery as to loss of value.

This style of chair has been around a couple hundred years.
