Strait Chinese Bag used for Marriage about 100 years ago
Details: this red bag was made from velvet. The color represent happiness for Chinese people on the wedding ceremony. It was decorated with ornament that made from gold or gold leaf. It was used by Strait Chinese in Indonesia about 100 years ago.

Sorry but looks like something newly made, all antique Chinese purses I have seen are all Incredible hand done silk scenes with figurals and floral patterns in Brilliant colors. Just my 2 cents

You could be right, Wendy, I do agree it doesn't look its age, hence the reference to  'age'


harysunaryo  may be able to give more info ... possibly the Strait Chinese adopted a different style? Are there any other examples out there, say in museums?

Looks new to me as well......I have seen many older pieces of woven works and this appears new!

Yup KC and if this is supposed to be a Chinese Marriage bag 100 years old  why then in photo 2 does the writing under each block with design (person or place) looks to be from our English alphabet?? and upon a closer look at each panel the designs look as if from India.

 designs on this bag are from India   second photo  - top panel design on left it says under the picture Shanjahan -  who is ShahJahan (of the Taj Mahal fame), the son of Jahangir ascending the throne. ShahJahan was the grand old emperor Akbar’s favorite grandson. and the panel below that one resembles a Taj Mahal type of building. Did the Chinese  in Indonesia about 100 years ago use our alphabet on these types of items??

Just for grins and educational purposes tho'...... When arranged marriages were being set up in China, the matchmaker held a tea and invited the "couple" (and their families) to come and meet for the first time. The "proposed wife to be" serves tea to the "proposed husband to be" and his family members. If the man likes the woman he would propose by offering her a ornately embroidered red bag on a saucer. If the young lady accepts the saucer she accepts the proposal and the couple is engaged.

 harysunaryo may be correct. I just can't see an original bag of 100 years old having American writing on it if it was to be used in such a  traditional ceremony. possibly it was a copy made for sale to American tourists.

harysunaryo's name has changed color because he is no longer a member.  If you look at one of the posts, it says "Guest" under the name.  You must be a member to post but after you post and then close your member profile, the post remains as a "Guest" post.  That is all I can figure out.  I think harysunaryo wanted to sell the items but realized this is not the venue to post "For Sale" items.
