Need to know two book values!
« on: February 05, 2010, 08:48:15 pm »
Hi everyone,  I was wondering if anyone can help me out determining the value of these two books I have.  One of the books title is My Friendship with Oscar Wilde by Alfred douglas inside the bookflap "One thousand copies only have been printed of this edition, of which the first hundred have been signed by the author.  This is number (can make out)", after that flap there is a picture of the author and signature.  The next book title is The Decameron of Boccaccio by Artur w. Murray, illustrated by Leopold Flemang Copyright i believe 1888 (can't make it out).  Any information would be helpful, thank you! :)

Several copies of the 1932, 1000 copy printing of "My Friendship With Oscar Wilde" are currently selling on Abe Books (A massive hub for book dealers) ranging in price from $20 to $120

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=douglas&bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&recentlyadded=all&sortby=17&sts=t&tn=my+friendship+with+oscar+wilde&x=6&y=14

On the Decameron of Boccaccio, there are several variations on this title, but none I could find by Murray. Can you double check that you have the title exactly as it appears in the book?

Thank you talesofthesevenseas for responding, I do appreciate your help.  Also, thank you for the link, when I tried searching on the internet couldn't find anything for the oscar wilde book.  The book title reads exactly on the binding "The Decameron of Boccaccio" Illustrated by Leopold Flemang  Price, Ten Shillings and Sixpence. The book was copyright 1888 ( I believe, not sure) by Arthur W. Murray (I dont think he is the author), I hope this helps, I could also post pictures.

Leopold Fleming (1831 -1911) was a great artist/printmaker.  His works are all over the place.

The references I find the Arthur Murray author is an author with the last name Chisolm, A. M. (Arthur Murray).
Remember they used pen names back in the time - so this could be him!

Is this yours?

Back in the days they did use pen names but I wasn't so sure he was the author, thank you for the wealth of info, and as of yet I haven't tried to sell it I just wanted to know some info.  Thank you!

Bumbul, you never answered if that was you on Craigslist.
According to that post, it has the very same information as yours.

I agree on this one because Arthur Murray wasn't the author....he filed for the copyright - now that I see a pic of the details of the one on Craigs list.
This same book is held at the Library of Congress http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&BBID=7305825&v3=1
with the file card reading:   http://lccn.loc.gov/16018439
The book was published in 1800 and was a translation from Italian into English by John Payne (author) exclusively for the trade/London.
There are others held at other libraries in the US.
