Steroscope w/ 148 Postcards
« on: April 25, 2010, 06:48:51 am »
Hi everyone, in my parents basement I found a old Underwood stereoscope along with 148 postcards. These are dating from the late 1800's up to 1906. Can you guys guess the value? Where would be best place to sell? All are in great condition! Thanks so much for your input!

Best place to look for current value is ebay. I believe I paid $55 for my scope in an antique shop. It's from the 1870's or 80's, I forgot what the date stamp says and I'm too lazy to crawl out of bed and look.  :P

Scopes are usually between 40 and 90 dollars depending on condition. Cards are worth between 2 and 10 dollars each depending on the picture content and age. If you have any from the 1870's I'd be interested in them! I like collecting the oldest ones I possibly can.

Please post a pic of the viewer.  There are many different types and models within a manufacturer and of course, condition.  Cards can be worth next to nothing for the very common types and worth $$$ depending on subject, age, local interest, photographer, etc.  Civil war cards are very desirable as are early Indian cards.  These would be just a couple of subjects that may bring considerably more money.  You need to go through them one by one and search on the internet for an exact card.  Hundreds/thousands of common cards languish in shops even at $1 per card.

Here's some pics- most of the cards are from different sights in Italy (1906), 1 from St. Louis World's Fair (1904), about 5 from the San Fransisco earthquake (1906). Also about 25 of them are from various tourist attractions around the US. All dating around the same time. Thanks again for your help!

One last little tip. Look super closely at the brass or metal parts. Many have a tiny date stamped in somewhere like mine does. You may need a microscope but it's worth it if you are curious about age.
