Bronze Snake Head stand, please provide info if known..
« on: May 12, 2010, 05:57:37 pm »
While attending University in 1983 I lived in a 3 storey walk-up.  The average age of the tenants was 85.

When a tenant moved on to a new  postal code (either a retirement home or the cemetery) family members often donated their loved ones valuables to the garbage bin behind the building.  One day as I walked by I noticed the legs of the table peeking out from the bin.  So I pulled the table out and have used it as a plant stand, table and general junk collector ever since.

The height is 29 inches and the width is 13 inches.

What makes this piece interesting is the four serpentine snake heads on each table leg.

Welcome NorthernGirl!  Good to hear you rescued this nice piece. Too many pieces of history have hit the dustbins.
Have you turned the table over and checked the undersides (both levels) and legs for any markings?

NorthernGirl, could you provide close-ups of the "snake" heads on the legs?  They kind of look like stylized dolphin heads to me but it is hard to tell from the pic provided.

I believe those are dolphin heads.

Just checked the table from the underside and there are no markings. Also when I found the table there was a square piece of marble sitting within the top of the table.  I still have that piece.  If you doubleclick on the picture and enlarge it the snake heads are much clearer.  I will still take a picture close up and post.

Welcome to the forum , NorthernGirl .

Nice Victorian cast-brass ( I don't think it's bronze , but I'm just lookin' at your images ) plant stand .

These typically had marble or onyx components , sometimes only on the top , but also on the lower portion .

Yours looks like c1890's to me (a time when they were quite popular) .
