Gift from monk
« on: August 15, 2009, 01:28:36 pm »
Hi all, This was a gift given to my husband from a very old monk. They were friends for many many years. He resided at St.Josephs Abbey in Massachusetts. He has now moved on and we do not even know if he is still living. Could anyone help?? It seems to be tin?? magnet does not stick its  3D. I  have not cleaned it. Any ideas on date, value anything??? Can find no makers mark.

Thanks

This is a wonderful metal relief art.  For the most part religious items are not highly collectible unless of major rareity or important maker.  However this item has a wonderful unique feel to it.   I'm a bit disconcerned in what appears to be staples attaching the art to the frame.  Not sure if they are hand driven into the frame or a staple gun.  If the later then that would say either not that old or this is not the orignal frame.  It appears to be 30's to 40's on just the photos, but this would just be a guess.  The art is somewhat unique also, maybe too much of the Di venci code stuff but sure looks like mary leaning on his shoulder, and then the fact that most of the guys have the short hair cut look, then of course we have the Chalice on the table.  This is a ringer for mid 20th century catholic art, except for mary.  Just find some intresting things about the art itself, compared to other last supper art.  All in all without much to go on the general worth is around $30.00 in my opinion

The words translate:

in Spanish       It completes Jesus cinema
In Latin           Avenging cina about Jesus
In Romanian   Last supper of Jesus
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Thanks so much ironlord & KC  for the info. The piece is held in place by small nails hand driven into the frame & just left straight to hold the piece in place. I did contact an artist about 4 years ago who had a picture of this on his website, he had seen this I believe in mexico ,the gentalmen that owned it allowed him to photograph his. The only diffrence was the one from mexico was on some type of canvis or animal hide as the gentalmen would roll it up and carry it everywhere with him. But it was the very same even down to Mary by his side. Love the Di venci code!!!

Thanks  again

wendy I think your plaque is based on the work (1560's) of Juan de Juanes 1523 - 1579, of Spain

I did find another of yours but need a translator....but I did figure out that 300 euros is $397 US  :)

Came across a rather poor 'copy' of your plaque....notice the lack of detail, say on the urn on the floor

Agree Sapphire huge lack of detail also the arm of Jesus on mine is extended out from the picture you could hang something from it. LOL thats why I said it must be a sign such an old post + falling over it while searching for something else just today has got to be some kind of sign!!!

Just realized why I never noticed this.........was 'before my time' !  You posted this when I was on vacation in Vancouver finding my Chinese wall hanging, which sent me on my search for information and led me here!   ;)

There's one like yours on Live Auctioneers.

http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/3630186

There's an estimate, but I'm not a member so I can't get the final sold price.

Another, based on the same painting.....but with subtle differences from yours.  Note again the urn and platter on the floor, as well as the 'cross' in place of the sand dollars on yours. This one had no bids (listing ended)
