Huge antique wood "box"?
« on: April 20, 2003, 11:21:40 am »
I have been given a huge antique "box" or trunk or chest and am curious as to what it is or would have been used for.  The box (for lack of a better word) is 91" wide across the front, 26.5" front to back and is 21" deep.  The front and sides have panels that are surrounded by what may be another type of wood that has elaborate carvings of a geometrical type pattern.  The same carving in a larger (2") pattern goes around the entire top of the piece and along all edges of the fronts and sides.  A different design is carved along the bottom outside of the box.

There is a hinged top, a lock, and the piece has no feet.  The bottom of the box has a slat type construction.  I do not know what kind of wood it is but is is extremely heavy.

Any idea what such a huge, heavy box would have been used for or what it is??

Thanks!
