Question on old clocks
« on: September 19, 2010, 06:41:09 pm »
I was told some old clocks have gold in them.
Is this true? and if so where would the gold be?

I've never heard of any clocks having gold on the insides but there are gold gilt clocks.

I'm pretty sure that someone at sometime or another has hidden some gold or gold coins inside of a clock for safe keeping. A neat place to hide gold in a clock would be to make the pendulum weights out of it.

Some watches, especially pocket watches, have gold in them. Their cases and/or chains are made of gold.

And it’s a pretty good bet that in the past 400 years there have been a few clocks with solid gold cases that were made for say a Russian Czar, a member of the Rothschild family, a Maharajas of India, etc.

Geeezee, even now days one reads about someone that has "solid gold bathroom fixtures".

Also, if there is any "metal" ornamentation on a clock....it can be gold painted over!  (That has been known to happen!)

Have heard to the weights on a grandfather clock having them!  Have also heard of a false bottom in a clock to contain $$$!
