My latin memory is "omnia gaulia divisa est ------"  Something like that -  9th grade - - Hey Dewain, I am IMPRESSED.   Now the question remains - is it original to the time period, or commemorative?  My guestimate is commemorative.  In 1664 was New York a city, or called a city?  And would it have been called a police department rather than a constabulary?  It was still an English colony then.

Any history buffs out there?  I'll try a quick google & see what I get.   KB

One terrific site :  scroll down the page and you'll see a reference to the symbols in the shields on their unifoms which sound a lot like those on your buckle, and it indicates a date of 1973.

But if the buckle were mine, I would take pics, and e-mail them to that museum site.  It seems to be "citizen friendly."

I also did NOT see any NYPD belt buckles for auction on e-bay.  The NYPD is a very revered organization.  'Specially since 9/11.  Good luck.    KB
