Pawned Clock!
« on: November 12, 2010, 03:01:46 am »
Hi,
I picked up this old clock, last weekend, in a little warehouse that specialises in tools, and saw this on the floor propped up against the wall. I like clocks, and have a few, so asked if it was for sale (and resisted asking why he was selling an old clock). We agreed on £20 (about $30), which was a bit of a gamble as there was no key, it was really quite dirty, the door wasn't sitting straight, the centre moulding is missing, and there was damage to the top with a finial missing.
I cleaned it up, wound it up, regulated it over the week, and it's kept perfect time, has a nice beat and chimes beautifully  :D
Looking at the door at some point in the past someone has replaced two hinge screws which don't fit, so I need to find replacements for those... My neighbour is very good at turning wood and offered to turn another finial to match the missing one... Lo and behold, when I went to remove it I realised that some enterprising soul had already replaced them with cut down chess pawns!! ;D
It's no Gustav Becker, but I'm always amazed that I can pick up lovely pieces such as this for so very little ... and I'm not complaining  :D

What a beautiful clock!  Too many are either too 'beefy' or overly ornate, yours has an understated elegance. Once you can add a few finishing touches you will have completed the next chapter in it's life that can be passed on down.  Maybe while doing this you will also find a bit of it's history as well. Wonderful find!  ;)

Thanks Sapphire ... 'Understated elegance' best describes all my clocks, I'm not a lover of the 'overly ornate', but I would still give them house space as I just love old clocks. To be honest, my favourite is a very plain, mid 1920's HAC, but if you asked me why... I couldn't tell you.
When I finally get put out to pasture, if I've not been grimly reaped beforehand   ;), I'd love to learn more about clocks and take up restoring them.

I love that term "understated elegance"!

Describes alot of things I have!  :)

I think it was pretty ingenious to use the chess pieces! LOL

I think I most definitely would, unfortunately there's an Ocean and a few thousand miles between us!!

This is my 'favourite' clock, but as I said, I've no idea why!   ??? ???

Nice clock, it's a shame it's missing a piece on the top  :(

Hi Ole... Do you mean around the clock face of the HAC?

Sorry, maybe you mean the first clock, not the HAC ....   :)
