Royal Doulton Teapot. Backstamp query.
« on: April 25, 2011, 02:16:06 pm »
Happy Easter everybody,
I've been given this Royal Doulton teapot but I am struggling to understand the backstamp,
The problem is it say's "Made in England", where as the majority of marks i've looked at are just England.
See here:  http://www.antique-marks.com/doulton-marks.html
There was also an item that sold on ebay (completed listings - Royal Doulton norfolk vase) with identical backstamp and the seller said it dates from 1912 which would conflict with the info in the above site.
Is it something as simple as sometimes Doulton used Made in England and others just England?
Any way i hope someone can shed some light on this and confirm date. Thanks in advance.

The numbers can't be seen to clearly in the pic so here they are: Rn No.251612 & Rn No.597783

Not sure about the difference in the Hallmarks used by Royal Doulton, I have seen both.  The name of the pattern Norfolk according to replacement puts it at the late 1800, to real early Century piece.  Here is the link, they have no value, but you can comapare your pattern.

I'm not certain until I look this up, but am pretty sure that it is an age thing. A late 19th century piece will have just 'England' on the backstamp, whereas later pieces (probably 20th century) will have 'Made in England'.

I'll let you know what I find, unless anyone else has any ideas?

Here is one like yours, I imagine taken from the other side? Backstamp numbers are identical apart from the second, starts with a 58 as opposed to 59.

and they have a whole selection that you could browse through .. so seems to be first half of 20th C.
