Rayo Lantern #77
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:22:49 am »
Hi everyone, I was searching this lantern online and felt at first that maybe it was a reproduction then when I found how to open it correctly now I see that it must have been painted at some point.
15.5 inches tall
Metal is magnetic except for oil cap, still has a wick but it is not loaded
Any thoughts dates and value would be fabulous :)
Thanks a Bunch,
Katie

Welcome to the forum smile4katie!   :)

Did a quick search and found these.......

http://www.prices4antiques.com/lighting/lanterns/Lantern-Rayo-No-77-Cold-Blast-1912-Patent-Standard-Oil-D9878932.htm

Patent date of 1912 doesn't necessarily mean production date, but does give you a starting point

http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/1167542

Don't know if prices show up for you as I am signed in to the site.....

Estimate $100 - $200
Starting Bid $10

SOLD for $20

Will check around a bit more when I get home from work. Hope these helped a bit.

From the look of the 5th picture someone cranked the wick into the base. You will hafta fish it outta there and re-insert in the burner ...... by either inserting it in the top of the burner and cranking it down ...... or removing the burner from the base and inserting it in the bottom and cranking it up.

ps: the burner screws into the base. A left twisting should easily remove it.

Sapphire's post of the liveauctioneers price of $20 is accurate. I see many of these, not necessarily Rayo, and most go for $10-20. I have paid $5 for some used as garden accents. The brand usually seen here in Wisconsin is Dietz. Commonly referred to as barn lanterns here.

Genuine marked Railroad lanterns are much higher.

Thanks all :)
That old ad was very cool!

I am still a tad curious about the fact that it has the original globe because I can not find one of them any where. But no matter it looks awesome on my mantle and as soon as I get the plain replacement globe I'll use it!

I have a couple of other things I want you guys to check out for me as soon as I have time to get them in here!

Thanks again,
Katie

Why a replacement globe, ..... one could cost you as much as the lantern is worth.

Fix the wick, ..... put some kero in it ...... and sit it back on your mantle.

And when the lights go out, ..... take it down and light it ...... and you won't be in the dark. ;D ;D ;D

Really? Looks like I can get a globe for around $7 I would rather use that and put the original away, you just never know how much it may be worth when my children are lighting it for their children :)

Rayo barn lanterns are easy to search for. Just type "Rayo barn lantern" in Google and take your pick. Not hard to find. Prices vary and I doubt these will ever increase to a price level your kids will fight over. Too many of them were made and still survive.
