What kind of lighting tool is this?
« on: July 15, 2011, 03:47:23 pm »
Hello All.  I came across this in a box with other items I had bought in an auction.  I have done some research on line but have not found anything like this.  I have asked questions amongst some of my friends with answers ranging from a hand warmer to something a soldier would use in the trenches during the 1st or 2nd World Wars.   I would be really grateful if someone could tell me exactly what it is.  Many thanks.

OK, thanks guys for your input.  Does anyone have any idea when it dates from and what meal it is?  Also, does anyone know the exact name of it?    This one really has me puzzled!!   Cheers

??? What happened to the other pics?  The other pics that were posted would be nice to look at and also any markings stamped in the metal would be nice.

I am familiar with the Jon-e brand and used them for many years ice fishing. I am also familiar with Zippo, Peacock, "Made in Occupied Japan", and some other off brand that used solid fuel sticks rather than liquid. The latter did not work very well so I did not use it much.  The one pictured I have never seen before so I may be revising my thinking that this was a horizontal warmer made to stay horizontal and for a special object or use. Any markings would help in a search.

Sorry, I took the other pics off by accident.  Thank you for your last comments which I am now going to do some research on.  There are no markings on it whatsoever (have been over and over it with a magnifyer! lol).

It is a medical field alcohol burner for sterilizing utensils.

After you re-posted the pics and I could see the "wick" was out from the body and the body held liquid fuel, I immediately thought alcohol burner. A few short searches on images later turned up an almost identical item on eBay.

The reason the first one is not selling is because one recently sold for less than $6...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160596245621+&clk_rvr_id=248308738956&item=160596245621&lgeo=1&vectorid=229466

My wife says I am absolutely something but I do not think the word was brilliant.  ;)
