Old oil painting?
« on: August 19, 2011, 02:59:01 pm »
Here is another painting from the same house in Seattle that we are also clueless about. The canvas has some damage and needs to be cleaned. I've had it out of the frame and there is no signature. Minimal chipping on the frame on one corner.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks...
Penny

If I were you,, I would research owners of the house these came from !!  Its possible that one was the artist !!  Some artists do work in several mediums !!

Great suggestion and wish I could do that. It's been over 30 years. House is gone - all commercial, father-in-law passed, mother-in-law wouldn't have a clue. We waited too long. In the mean time I might have the painting cleaned and repaired. Thanks Mart. Have a great day.

I'm going to re-ask your question here (from the Projects thread) since I know we have a few folks here from the PNW.

Anyone know of a good place/person who can do restoration on a plaster frame? (See pics in the Projects section)

Fancypants, I'm lookin' at you!!  ;D  :D  ;D

After reading what was stated on “the Projects thread” all I’ve got to say is …. Mart is correct, it is not that hard to do.

I have used both Plaster of Paris and the “white” paintable caulking one uses around windows, doors, etc. The 1st frame I renovated I tried the “mold method” …… but then I found is simpler and quicker just to “freehand” it. Those frame types are so “busy” that a week after you repaint one …… even you yourself will have to look closely to find the places that you did the repair work to. And ps, an application from a little bottle of artist quality “gold” paint or a can of “gold” spray paint will make your frame look original.

Okay, sounds doable. If I mess it up I can always go to plan B. Nothing ventured nothing gained, right?.

Can I chance cleaning a canvas, or should that be done by a professional? Plus, it has a tiny tear in it.

Hey Cogar,, are you sure we didn`t go to different schools together ??  I use the caulk too for small areas !! Was shocked to hear that anyone else used it too !! And if its thinned down and brushed on it will stabilize all those tiny cracks in a frame !! You are right,, if its close and painted with a good gold paint,, you really can`t see it !!  Only problem with this frame is that its an entire side that needs to be replaced so it would pretty much have to be molded !!
As for cleaning, fix the tear first, I have had pretty good results if its a small tear,, by using surgical tape on the back, then I get my acrylic paint and blend matching colors over the exposed canvas fibers !!  Clean after all that is dry with 1 oz baby shampoo + 1 tsp bleach or peroxide in about 1 1/2 C. water !! Just use a soft cloth and wet it in the solution and squeeze most of the water out and rub gently to remove grime !! Then do the same with clear water !! Do not try to clean the back, work only on the front !! Dry at least a couple of days !!  Once oil paint and acrylic paint are dry and cured they are pretty stable, the canvas is the part you need to be careful with !!
