Small bottle, can't identify the logo
« on: August 26, 2011, 07:57:10 pm »
Hi all!  I got an auction box lot with some old bottles in it--a late 1800s early 1900s inkwell, an early Heinz bottle, etc.--this one was in it, but I am having the darndest time identifying it.  It has a "95" on the bottom and a small logo that looks like a crown in a circle.  It is 1.6" H & 0.9" W, a small little thing with what looks like screwtop threads.  Would that mean it's like 1950s?  Just wondering if anyone knows this logo or how to track it down, because all I keep coming up with is Crown Royal stuff  :-\

It has that rainbowy sheen to it that some antique bottles get from age, sun, or elements...anyone know what that's called?  That and the items it was purchased with makes me think it might be something at least interesting!

This is a great site to look for marks on Glassware, may have to do a bit of a looking.

Screw tops were first made in 1924. 35 has to do with the patent number. The less numbers the earlier the patent, so if it just had a 3 the bottle would have been older. That bottle could be 30's 40's.

It could be "Excelsior Glass". They use the crown trademark.

I went to the Glass marks websites I have bookmarked and the closest I came up with is Rosenthal also uses a crown, but nothing quite like that.

Thanks everyone!

KC it was bought with a Paul's Safety Bottle & Ink Co. inkwell 1880-1933, of which the only other one which I found of that exact kind was excavated & belongs to a Historical Society;  also with a short Heinz bottle that also looks turn of the century but I'm waiting for Heinz to get back to me...they couldn't find it in their catalogues and a kind Heinz employee is sending photos of it to their archivist for identification.  I'm thinking this bottle was saved for a reason, too...

I will look thru that site with glassware markings, thank u...I have looked through a lot of them already (on other sites) and my eyeballs are starting to twitch but I don't want to give up yet!

Excelsior...that seems promising, thank you!  I am trying to find any pictures of the Excelsior logo but so far have only found descriptions that do match this logo as far as descriptions go.

OK, this may be all just blowing in the wind but here goes.......

(Can't copy and paste from this site so will post tidbits)

"Some Notes on Bottle Mould Numbers from the Dominion Glass Company and it's Predecessors"

George Miller and Elizabeth Jorgensen

http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:EGnvD-ZECGgJ:www.sha.org/research_resources/documents/Some%2520Notes%2520on%2520Bottle%2520Mould%2520Numbers%2520from%2520the%2520Dominion%2520Glass%2520Company%2520and%2520its%2520Predecessors%2520-%2520English.pdf+excelcior+glass+mark&hl=en&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgvC-d7isjT7bJeENUrwcUalC_JcsPoIqkSS1Ei7eQsVMrTbYOqQe43qe8sjh3WswdqnvmlbctiLJmLxKK-QzZn9puh_mzIczGqmf_daWXtjX_3ttFeT0_JSYLoEIKSTyzdvdQ0&sig=AHIEtbQ45Tle63xH6ubru7lQKiE10_yYGQ

A lot on info on mould numbers and their span of years........for instance a lower numbered mould could appear much later with a different type of closure. Will leave all that reading for you  ;)

Scrolling down to Page 12 (page 15 using the left hand column search) you'll find a list of glass companies, their dates in production and also their assimilation into what became Dominion Glass.  Excelsior > Northern American > Diamond > Diamond Flint > Dominion (1913-1978)

Jump to the Wallaceburg plant site (Syndenham Glass > Diamond Flint 1908)  Page 44 (page 47 on the left).  There are catalogue numbers for most of the bottles/jars that they produced.

#95 was listed as a 2 oz Pomade

Now somewhere in my reading last night I did (or at least I think I did) come across the mention of the circle/crown mark but for the life of me can't find it or remember who is was attributed to (Excelsior, Dominion, ??) , except that whatever I read sent me in the direction of this site.

Don't know if this is of any use or just a wild goose chase.  :D

Looking at the top pic, between the two outside rings there appears to be a sort of half circle that shows !!  Is there a pocket inside as well ??  If so then your bottle is an ink bottle as well !! The small size indicates that it might be !!

I came home last night from my sister's birthday party and saw all of your messages, and I had tears in my eyes.  I can't believe how sweet and kind you all are to have gone out of your way to help me out with researching this.  God bless you a thousand times over for being such great people.

I'm not sure if I've identified the bottle yet or not, but I'll keep you posted...still researching!  XO!

(On another note, I went to a fabulous auction this weekend and I can't wait to post some of my finds for you guys to see...taking pictures today!)
