Sandwich Glass Boat......
« on: August 29, 2011, 06:42:17 pm »
Hello all, Im in need of some help....Need some more info on this sandwich glass boat. Most of all, I need to know the current market value. I was able to find this http://thecuriouseum.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/%E2%80%9Cbucket-list%E2%80%9D-treasures/ but really need to know current market value.

Has minor "knicks" on bottom, which seems to be usual considering the age.

Once again, I truly appreciate any help!

This is for sure a unusual Boston and Sandwich piece.  Don't see much Colbalt Blue boston and sandwich items around.  I have had great luck with most of my boston and sandwich items.   Boston and Sandwich made really nice stuff and really cheap stuff, being the first pressed glass company.  Boston and Sandwich wanted to offer the common person stuff as nice as the nice cut crystal the rich was enjoying in the victorian age.  Most Colbalt of that age was used as medicine and Apothery type bottle.  As for value I would have to snoop around considering the item appears very unique for Boston and Sandwich Co.  I would say it would at least get $50.00 on Ebay easy, but again that would be a quess.  The only draw back with Boston and Sandwich stuff is many glass novices don't know much about boston and sandwich, they seem stuck on companies like Fenton, Blenko, and Anchor Hockings  ;)

The link that antiquemania posted stated that this piece is from the 1820s-1830s and extremely rare. If so, I'd say $50 is way low!

You didn't say the measurements of the item...this is not quite your item, but from the photos at least I'm guessing it may be similar in size, is from the same company and is also cobalt:  http://www.skinnerinc.com/asp/fullCataloguese.asp?salelot=2144+++++581+&refno=++484488, pressed glass 1825-1850, was estimated at $200-250 but ended up selling for $950.  Then again remember 2 things:  1) sometimes similar size/brand/year pieces that are different styles/purposes can vary greatly in price and 2) that was an online auctioneer site, which in my experience usually has a higher going rate than say eBay.  If I were you, in my humble opinion, I'd auction it off before I would just sell it to someone for what I'm told is a fair market value, because it may shoot way up over the estimated value like the one on the link I just posted.  Your item seems pretty collectable.  Would you mind sharing it with us what it went for if you do auction it off?  Would be helpful for everyone the future!

ironlord, you made me blush because I'm a glass "novice" who has never before heard of the Boston & Sandwich co. and am "stuck on" brands like Fenton so far!  Haha.  But I don't discriminate, and I'm happy to have had the chance to take a peek at this piece!   :)

I love that pink Boston and Sandwich basket you have for sale on ebay ironlord. Very rarely do I see glass that I love. It either has to be pre-1800 or very unique.

Yea mostly I just ment it seems that Boston and Sandwich seems to be a step child of the Glass world.   I would have to agree that you may want to look a bit deeper on this piece of glass, Colbalt, Unique and Sandwich could mean $$$.00 for sure.  just don't be let down when it only brings $$.00.   Maybe a Auction house may serve you better, but would have to be a big name auction house, Local Auction houses would not generate that amount for sure, trust me that is where I mostly buy my stuff and it sells cheap.    Hosman thanks for the comments on my little pink Basket, It is sure a nice piece, but this is the second time I posted it,  we will see if it sells at that price this time.

Totally agree with you Ironlord about the familiarity of the collectors out there with Boston & Sandwich.  Because of that....unfortunate ly....the value isn't up to where "we" think it should be.  Buyer demand dictates the market!
