Parlor Set - Claw Foot Detail Needed
« on: October 18, 2011, 07:29:16 am »
Hello Everyone,

Just picked-up this set for $40 at a local estate sale.  The armchair and settee are matching pieces, so all of the carving details are the same.  The wood and joinery is in very good shape, but the front feet of both pieces have been broken/gnawed off!  I can see remnants of claw feet, and would like to attempt to carve replacements, but I am not sure what style would be appropriate.  If anyone can provide more details about the potential age and/or style of these, and a best guess as to the type of claw foot that it might have been (posting a copied pic of an example from Google Images would put me greatly in your debt), I could move forward.  I have seen somewhat similar pieces, but nothing as beefy as these...

Thanks in advance guys - I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

This type foot (appears to be lions paw type) was common during the late Empire period but each manufacturer had its own variation and finding the exact one would be difficult !! Looks like it was stored in a damp basement or similar area because the sides of these feet were actually glued on !!  Rarely were they made in one piece except in very high end furniture !! Several companies do make replacement legs for many types of furniture which may be the best way to go if you could get the old legs off !! I had to order replacements for a claw and ball leg chair once !! I will look later and see if I can find something similar to yours but you may just have to use your best guess on these !!
