your opinion on this cranberry/brass candle holder
« on: November 19, 2011, 11:18:17 am »
Hello

Whatīs your opinion on this candle holder in two aspects:

1. Its probable age?

2. If, the fact that the glass is cloudy as you can see from the picture, diminishes it value or not.

Thanks

a 3rd question: Would you clean the brown colour of the brass or would leave just as is?

Are there any markings on bottom of the holder ??  In this instance I would use a good quality cleaner/polish and clean the brass !!  It has quite a bit of green corrosion which will eat through the surface finish if it hasn`t already !! Cloudy glass that cannot be cleaned does devalue a piece by 50% or more !!  Cant really tell age without markings or additional info !!

Thanks for your answer. There are no marks.

1- Regarding polishing the brass, I thought that if removed the patina  and leave it brilliant would make lost its value.

2. Is there any home product for cleaning this glass?

3- I am not sure if any valuation can ge given at this forum, at least if not in money terms, in aesthetical, interest terms. In such a case How interest degree do you consider this piece has?

Thanks

In some instances you are right !!  Many do like the old look but in my opinion, brass is not such a valuable metal  ( with the exception of moderate to extremely old pieces or those with historical reference ) that it would hurt to clean it and if the green corrosion eats through the metal,, its worth nothing !! Try to clean the interior of the glass with one of those teflon scrubbies and dish soap. then let it dry !!  If the cloudy comes back,, there may not be anything you can do !!  There are several things you can try but they rarely work !!
Its fine to give values here if we know what it would be, but sometimes we cannot say with any certainty !!  In the condition I see your candleholder in,, about $ 10.00 on a good day !!  But this is only my opinion,, see what others have to say !!

I searched a bit but didn't find anything. As far as cleaning, I agree w/Mart. You don't (maybe shouldn't) get it looking like new but the green corrosion needs to go. I looked at ebay and most of the old brass is cleaned. A nice looking item will sell much better and to a wider audience imho. Here's some tips here: http://www.diylife.com/2010/08/24/home-ec-how-to-clean-brass/ Not sure you have to go to great lengths here - just try and stop the corrosion.

Age...  What do you know about this? Has it been in your family for a long time? It doesn't look old to me but I am no expert - not even close. Certainly not fancy enough for a Victorian piece...but again, not my area of expertise.

Can you describe the glass better? Does it come out? Does it have bubbles? Is it hand blown? what does the bottom look like?

Thanks for your aswers.

I donīt know anything. Only that I have been told that perhaps could be from around 1910.

The glass shows some little bubbles, which, I suppose,  points is blown cranberry glass. I think hat cranberry blown glass was mainly made in victorian times.

Would work in removing corrosion without remoin patina the use of toothpaste?

Thanks

You can try toothpaste but it is slightly abrasive so you are better off using a good quality cleaner/polish made for brass !! When dealing with decorative items like this patina is not necessarily something you want to save !!  Most people would not want something sitting on their dining table or anywhere else that was not pretty !!  Leaving the brass like it is it makes it look like it wasn`t taken care of !!  A piece worth good money would have been cleaned regularly and displayed !!

If it is brass you can use lemon juice. Someone gave me this tip when I was redoing a brass chandelier and it worked amazing.

After reading again your messages and seeing again the pictures, I have been thinking on this:

When you mention that is necessary to remove the green corrosion, Are you referring to ALL the  brownish nronze colour of the piece, or to the white/greenish spots on the base which can be seen?

thank you

Mart, I can't stop laughing at your blind squirrel remark!  I must say I have used some of the comments learned on this site (see, we are gettin' ed-u-ca-ted on more than antiques!)!
