Metal "Amazon" woman lamp identification
« on: November 21, 2011, 04:38:36 pm »
This lamp was given to my grandfather by a woman who immigrated to the United States from Ireland. He converted the lamp from gas or oil to electric. Other than that I do not know much about the actual origins of the lamp.

On the bottom of the lamp underneath the legs it appears to say "Mullers" and "-NS NY" but the word before Mullers and the rest of the word with the "NS" in it are cut off by support beams that have been welded on by someone in the past. I have researched metal sculptures associated with the name Muller, and came across "Hans Muller", but since the 'u' doesn't have two dots above it where it is written on the lamp, I have read that it is probably not the work of Hans Muller.

I have attached pictures of the lamp. Does anyone know anything about its origins?

Yep...I was just ready to say that. ;)

Probably dates back to the late 1880's. It was most likely fitted with a fancy cast holder for a kerosene font.

I think someone took a leftover statue of Diana the huntress, and slapped an "Amazon" label on it.  It's not like it's just a close reminder -- the face and attitude look EXACTLY like many Diana statues!!!  The greek revival must have been over, and they had all these leftover Diana statues!

Yes its a floor lamp its 59 inches tall.

So do you think that it is an original work by the Mullers, or that someone altered it and then put the word "Amazon" on it?

Thanks everyone, you've already given me a lot more information than I previously had! =]

Is the word Amazon on the base or if not,, where is it located and is that all it says ?? Bronze work would be done in a foundry setting so if it is molded on the piece I doubt that it would have been added later !!  It would look pretty sloppy if anyone tried to do that !!  It was probably the name that Mullers gave the lamp !! Take a pic of the name and post it if there is a question !!
