Small Vase..Satsuma..Noritake? 1945?
« on: November 24, 2011, 07:51:08 pm »
Hi All,

I have a small vase here, Japanese, probably for flower arranging, that would be a single flower as it is only 20cm, or around 4inch high vase, could anybody shed any light on it? and not just for photosynthesis purposes, I would like to know its possible source or just any info would be appreciated, I have seen something similar in terms of scene but my information on these things is limited in the cant see the wood for the trees sense.
It has gold paint, with some raised 'morije' (?) work, beading in the paint, jar depicts what i think are two immortals or wise men, one on each side with river/ mountain landscape behind, one of these characters seems a very important type as he has loads of make up on and about five more haloes than the folically challenged chap on the other side of the pot, that said,  the baldy one is certainly the hardest looking if it came to a straight fight. But joking aside, any info on this would be of great interest.

The label on the bottom suggestes Noritake but here is no Wreath on the logog, but the letter seems styled the same, and I have heard that it could sometimes be reversed in this way so it appears as a W. Could this be an earlier piece though?

Many thanks,

Domo arigato! :->

Goodness, this is a hard one! There are so many similar ones out there but not one that I could find with that mark.
I know absolutely nothing about antiques, so I hope others here will chime in and correct me if I am wrong.

I have seen these called Satsuma style, Japanese moriage. With the women called a Kannon and and the man a Rakan.
Wish I could be of more help.
