h j scheirich hoosier cabinet
« on: December 02, 2011, 05:35:28 am »
Tried posting this yesterday and it didn't take (??) I have received a Hoosier with the original fully functional flour sifter/hopper that has the original paperwork documentation still intact attached underneath the base. It has a number 877 stamped on the wood and in the document it says "Kitchen cabinet...white and red...Item 3383-D". I am trying to find out the original mfg date and either a photo or description exactly HOW it should be painted when restoration is done (what's white, what's red, etc).  I have a photo but it is too big (1.55MB) to upload

A white body and porcelain top with a red edge and red handles and pulls...that description would cover the majority of painted "Hoosiers". Some companies would add an art deco stencil design to the door fronts, but not always.

Rauville`s pic is pretty typical of most hoosiers !!  If you need parts contact this guy "danny@scheirich.net" he says he bought out a bunch of their stock in the ad I saw !!

Thanks! The baked enamel on steel work surface is white with just red around the rim. Like I said, someone has repainted the other parts a few times through the years so I have some work to do to restore the proper finish. I notice the pulls on Rauville's unit are painted red. Do they usually get painted? Mine are polished metal. Makes me wonder if I need to search for authentic pulls as well.

Oh, and those slats lying on the work surface are the roll up door that goes in that open space.

If your pulls are original, don't do anything to them. Many of those painted cabinets came equipped with red plastic / bakelite handles, which usually had a thin chrome metal strip across the face of the handle. I don't know if such hardware is still available or not.
That's going to be a nice piece restored.

If it were me,, I would paint that trim piece on top red, change the hardware to red in the same style/shape if possible and do the decals on the doors !!

The red bakelite/chrome handles are on Ebay. We had another person searching for them a year or so ago. There are different types, so run a search on Ebay for red chrome pulls and then look for your type. Be sure to measure the distance from center to center on the mounting holes before ordering.

What an adorable cabinet!!!  I love the red trim  ;D

Yours is the first I've seen with the design over the glass like mine. This one is made by the Keystone Cabinet Co. out of Littlestown, PA.

I can fully appreciate the meaning behind the phrase "They just don't make 'em like they used to".
