What is this?

-I asked my grandfather what is was, and he wasn't sure. So I went to yahoo answers and got no reply. Since I have no idea what it is, there's nothing on google I can even begin to guess what to search on to find out exactly what it is. :-\
-Can you help me identify it? Specifically what's it called...?

Its very short, about a foot.

When I first glanced at it folded up I thought it was one of those old fashion boards clothes were scrubbed on, then realized those had grid surfaces and this did not. (And then I further realized this could unfolded and stand up by itself)

It's a drying rack for clothes if I am not mistaken. One came up on Craigslist recently that had a wash wringer attached to it. Let me see if it is still up...

I was thinking of that possibly, I didn't spend enough time with it tinkering to find out for certain. But the bottom stand very easily unfolds...

My grandfather's guess was that its purpose was to hold some type of old fashion graph, which would explain the front and back 2 layers of wood as well as the suspended metal base and top- as if it to frame something. But he was unsure.

Well....I'm believing that it isn't sitting in the correct figuration.

You can tell by the slotted center of the wood that it can be adjusted back/forth.  It possibly sits on legs...if turned a different way?!

KC & mart you're right. I was able to get a hold of it again and though at first it was jammed- I finally got the second part to unfold. It stands like a table but like a very unusual one...

It looks like there is a screw where I could adjust the length of it, but that screw is too rusted over to do so.

Yes, if you loosen that wingnut on that bar it will slide apart the length of that "slot".

Those 2 "look-like" cutter bars on the end have me confused as to their use.

To me, this device should be setting with the end having the metal bars being the "working surface". The adjustment then would be for height, if it was placed in front of you, in the form of a "backward C".
That still doesn't answer the question of what it is for...but, in my mind, it makes it easier to picture how it was used. I'm thinking some form of creative craft required one of these for producing something???
