If you could identify these items (2)
« on: January 10, 2012, 08:46:54 am »

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to help a friend of mine (who doesn't speak English) sell his small collection of coins and ivory figurines. He bought the figurines many years ago when he lived in Russia. According to his knowledge they can be sold for much more nowadays. And he also collected a few coins and some other objects years ago but collecting never became a big part of his life. So we don't really know anything about the items and would like to find out. It would be great if you guys can identify them and tell us what their cost might be. Thank you so much.

These are half of the ivory figurines and their size is roughly 12-16cm long and 10-15cm tall.

Some nice items your friend has there , Gom .

The ivory carvings appear to be of Yupik (Siberian) origin .

The binocs appear to be more like "Opera glasses" to me ... are there any markings on them ?

Hi!  Welcome!

The question I have for you is "are they real ivory".  I have made several trips to Russia and purchased items that were even being sold out of museums - of which one really wasn't ivory and it had been displayed that way for years!  The subjects in the piece look more like Eskimo but could resemble Kazakhstani.

I also agree that the small piece is more like an opera glass and even from Russia should have some type of mark on them.
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

The coin looks very similar to the Christ from the Byzantine Empire.

This page could be a good starting point for you: http://www.ancientresource.com/lots/ancient-coins/gold-coins.html

(last one sold for $2100)

Great! Thank you!

I don't have the pieces with me but i'll find out about any markings on them as soon as possible.

Jramirez05, what you're saying makes perfect sense because Bulgaria, where i'm from, has been a part of the Byzantine Empire. Yes, the coin in this website is very very similar.
