Asian Warrior and Horse Picture
« on: January 20, 2012, 11:36:16 am »
Hi, I need help in identifying the artist and possible age of painting. Framed with border measuring 14-1/2" X 18", actual painting measuring approximately 7" X 10 1/2". Very interesting piece and framed with care. It does not appear to be a print, the lighting on the photo does not show the true colors. It has bright colors with some gold coloring in the warrior's hat and the foot of the animal. It look like the color could have been applied by a pen. Could it be rice paper? A close look under bright lighting it appears as though their are tiny round dots to entire surface. I was not able to remove from framing to examined the texture of board or canvas. But I don't believe this is a lithograph. The signature look authentic and not printed.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Where did you find this picture ?? It appears to be a folk art piece  but cannot translate the signature !! And pics are not good enough to tell what kind of paper it is on !!  Looks to be a drawing to me !! Is there some reason you can`t look at the back and at the paper !!  Simple to take it out of the frame !!

Thank you Mart.  I purchased item at a Mission second hand store that receive their goods from donations.  I was afraid to remove it from the frame.  I took the pictures several months ago when I first bought it.  However I can attempt to remove from frame and re-post.  Thanks

It should not damage it if done carefully !!  If you think that it may damage it then do not attempt it yourself !!  Might take it to a frame shop that has the tools !!

(Matt), Thank you for the encouragement to remove print from frame.

Here's the story;
I actually found at AllPosters.com a Giclee Print simply Titled "Scene from the Album of the Conqueror, Nomad Life.

My research indicates Turkish Art  taken from a UNESCO World Art Series Album, call "Turkey: Ancient Minatures"   drawing by Mehmed Siyah Kalem a 15th century artist whose works can be found in The Album of the Conqueror.  Print early C20th (possibily), copyright publishing company noted as The New York Graphic Society. (Could not find the print on NYGS website by name though???).  However Mystery Solved. Thanks

I attached new photos to share.

Hello it's me again.  Well, I am a little puzzled about this print.  The actual colors (gold and reds, etc.) looks hand applied.  What is the possiblity that this could be a handpainted print?  The documented original appears to be without color.  See details at following link http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0006/000634/063446eo.pdf

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  New pictures attached. Thanks

(Sorry about the blurred one :-\ but I had re-framed drawing before I realized I needed another really close-up picture)

Is your print attached to the white back, or is it a part of it !!  Could have been hand colored but not likely !!  More likely the print was colored to make it easier to sell, and all others were copied from it !!  Have you done a google search to see if any others show up !! If the art piece is attached to the white part,, possibly a book print since it originally was in an album !!  Long ago many books that held art like this were larger than our books today !!

Matt- No, the print is a part of the white back (10.5 X 13") not attached. The only other prints I found was at AllPoster.com and it has the same colors.  I'm guessing the New York Graphic Society added color and prints were made from that.  I appreciate your input.  Thanks

Image of the back added to share.

  I think its quite a unique piece !!   Art need not be expensive to be enjoyed !!  It just needs to stir the soul to be great !!
