Need help dating a picture frame
« on: January 30, 2012, 02:52:41 pm »
Hello! I bought this frame from an antique store this weekend and was wondering if any of you might know if it's actually an antique and, if so, how old it is. The backboard seems to be cardboard with a velveteen-like cover that has some wear on the front. The back shows some water damage, and it's a little warped around the edges. There are no pins or staples holding the backboard on -- it just pops in there.

I'm usually OK with dating things, but I'm not even sure what style this is. I'm guessing 1930s if it's not modern? It was $12, so either way, I'm pleased with the find.

Also, the rosary was my own touch. The frame didn't come with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I should probably mention that the antique shop owner didn't know much about it. She said it came from an estate sale she went to earlier that week.

I am hoping the back will show some signs of age, I'm afraid I don't see much in the way of age on the front!

That looks to me like a frame for a mirror.

I've attached the back view. It looks fairly unremarkable to me; there are no markings that would indicate a brand. The hanger is pretty useless. I can't imagine that it came with the original because it's so impractical. Anyway, you can kind of see the water damage, and there's some glue or something around the edges. Regardless of its age, it looks really good on my wall and it was a bargain!

I was thinking it was kind of like a mirror frame, too, but I wasn't sure if they came with backings like a picture frame or not. Maybe the mirror was ripped out and the backing was added later?

Not positive but looks like 80`s Home Interior stuff !! It did have a mirror I think !!  Likely about 10 inches tall or a little less ??  Had some of their items at one time !! Good thing is,, its being lightly collected now !!

Oh yeah, the measurements. The whole frame measures about 17 inches by 13, and the framed bit measures about 13 by 10.

I'm not surprised that it's probably from the '80s. My boyfriend said it might be a '70s repro, but I told him if anything it was made in the '80s when they had the Victorian revival thing going on (although this isn't completely true to Victorian style, I'm sure).

Still, can't complain! Thanks for the input.

They had several sizes of similar items and many were Victorian in style !! Home Interior was kind of like tupperware. The ladies had parties to sell to friends and acquire points !!  The points could be traded for home decor items !!  They had some nice looking items that would appear older in style !! I would think that probably the mirror broke and someone replaced it with what you have now !! I have seen some frames similarly done with the fabric and used to hang jewelry on !!

I have a friend who sells Celebrating Home; I'm guessing it's basically the same thing. Thanks for the info! The jewelry hanger thing is a pretty good idea.
