Need help!!!
« on: March 08, 2012, 11:24:09 pm »
I have a blue and white porcelain platter made by United wilson (1897). I would like to know if this is worth any money? It is in great condition with no chips or cracks along the edges. I know it is a reproduction but even the reproductions are worth money sometimes?

Chris, if you look in you can verify what I am saying...but Fake/Repro.  They didn't disclaimers such as "for decorative purposes" and "Not for consumption, etc." in 1897.

And referring to Chris' site Porcelain Marks & More (Which is thoroughly maintained and kept up - one of the very best sites out there!!!!!)

The stamp mark was put on at a later date you can tell because it is smudged (for decorative purposes hand painted) and is also off center. So I don't know who put that above and around the UW but it clearly does not belong there. I also believe this does not effect the value of the piece someone was just cautious and it is not from 1897 I already know this. Company didn't start up till 1970, but since these pieces are rare they are worth money I was just asking for more help in the selling process. Recently a pair of vases from United Wilson sold for over $400.00. My questions are about there blue and white porcelain REPRODUCTIONS.

http://www.hktdc.com/manufacturers-suppliers/United-Wilson-Porcelain-Fty/en/1X000SPZ/   This is the United Wilson Mfr`s site and clearly it states that they specialize in reproductions of antique porcelain. I believe that as reproductions the disclaimer has to be added before they can be brought into the U.S. since China does not have the same purity standards as we do.  So that is likely an import stamp !!

Regardless of the asking price you may see for originals or reproductions, what they have actually sold for is more of an indication of their monetary value.

These are 19th century blue/white canton.....which is what yours would be a copy of. The pair sold in Nov. 2011 for $126.50. Personally I would suggest that given a reproduction (even in perfect condition) you would realize quite a bit less than half that amount.

It might be a reproduction of those canton platters, but I see those all the time how many do you see with the United Wilson mark not many if any at all, thats why the one I have should be worth more. Its RARE and RARITY brings money

Mart have to agree $20.00 on a good day.   Adam your piece is not Rare it is a repo and with the date 1897 on the back stamp  I believe this was done to deceive a buyer not in the know. Have seen many United Wilson  plates & platters  on line all selling for $15.00 to $25.00 Maybe one of United Wilson reproduction very elaborate  large pieces will bring more money but Not your platter sorry  :(
RARITY does not always brings money.

The factory has been making/selling repros since 1970's - their specialty.

Many companies have imported items and put disclaimers that they weren't for public consumption use (Bombay Company was one.)  Resale is less than desirable.

This company specializes in making new items looks old - even with the realistic crazing.

You might get tops $30 in my area if it was a very large platter....But have to go along with the well given advice by mart and wendy!
