Need Help Identifying Old Bronze Figure
« on: March 19, 2012, 02:38:19 pm »
I'm having trouble identifying this item. I believe it is made of bronze and the horn on the wagon is ivory (bone?) No idea of the maker or origins. This is another piece I found going through my grandma's estate. About 2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches high.Any suggestions or advice would be helpful. Thanks!

How long is the ivory thing in the cart? I think it might actually be a tooth and I guess it was made to look like elephant ivory? being pulled in a cart. Tiger tooth?

Does a magnet stick to it?

Just tried it. No, a magnet does not stick to it.

So, I am trying to determine now if this is bronze or bras. A magnet does not stick to it. Am I safe assuming it is bronze? J=I have looked at a few other sites to find a make or even a year for this item. Can't find anything,so if I put it on a online auction site my information will be extremely limited. Many thanks again for those who have helped or offered advice.

Can you post some better close ups?  Take pics in good light with flash off.

I'm trying to find another camera to use. I can't go in to close without whatever I am shooting going blurry.

I saw something similar last night. It was painted bronze from Austria. Type painted bronze Austria in google image search. Good luck!

Not really !! Only 4 ferrous metals (magnetic) iron or steel, some stainless steel is only slightly magnetic, carbide, nickel and cobalt. Even pot metal or slag is non magnetic usually but does depend on what is in the mix  !!  I am betting its brass!!  Likely Chinese brass !!

Thanks. I can't seem to get any more clear pics(sorry) I need a new camera. There is an antique shop near me who does free appraisals. They only limit it to three items so I am trying to research and find out what I can. Many thanks again for all who helped and replied.

I am betting its a souvenier from someones trip to China !!  Tooth (or whatever it is) is likely bone !! But let us know what they say !!  Thats my best guess !!  Seems like I have seen something like it but for the life of me, can`t remember where !!  It just rang a bell when I first looked at it !!
