Looking for Antique Chair to Match Writing Desk
« on: March 26, 2012, 01:35:57 pm »
Good afternoon.  I am new to your Forum.  I would like to surprise my husband by completing his antique desk set with a matching chair.  I am attaching a picture of one of the legs and was hoping someone could help me place the type or sell me a chair that matches!
Thank you for any help!   Michelle.

That is known as an arrow foot used on Sheraton and Hepplewhite style furniture and also similar legs were used on other later 19th century styles. Your legs do not appear to be that old but it is hard to say for sure. Can you show us the whole piece? It is hard to match up just a leg!

Thank you!  I will try to sneak a picture of the desk tomorrow.  It is not assembled, but I think I can get a good shot of the front of it. I know it belonged to my husband's grandfather so I am hoping it is old!  :)

I am sure it is old. I just can't tell how old.

Okay - here is a picture of the front of the desk.  It is wrapped in plastic, so it is hard to see, but you can see the little knob on the drawer on the left, and the decorative carving on the right, is actually in the center of the desk front.
Thank you for any help!

I don't know how to explain it.  It's like a bed post scroll.  Here is a better picture of the emblem in the center of the desk.  At has two drawers, one on each side of the emblem.

Ok !!  Can see the shape now !! I don`t guess you can tell what the wood is,,, can you ??  Since finding the style is not particularly difficult and rarely would a carving like that be on a chair,, what you need to concentrate on is matching the wood and color with the S&H characteristics !! We do not have a buy/sell forum here but might help you define what you need to look for when shopping for the chair !!

Can't really tell for sure but it looks like mahogany to me.  Thank you for your help.  So far I'm guessing it's late 1800's Sheraton style with arrow feet.  Sound right?

If it helps at all, I took a closer look this morning and there is only one long, wide drawer.  It has a knob on each side of the emblem to make it look like two drawers, but it's all one.  Any ideas who the maker might be, or when it was made, or where I could find a chair to match?

Thank you!!!

They were making that style and similar ones from the 1890`s to 1930 or so !!  I am guessing yours around 1910 but could be anywhere between those years !!  Slight chance it could be older but personally I doubt it !! Mahogany is sure a possibility !!  Did I see on the front part something that looks like the wood is rolled outward ?? Name for it escapes me at the time !!

Yes - the emblem actually comes out of the wood.  Thank you.

Not the emblem, below that !!  It could be the pic and the plastic distorted the shape !!

No, I think that's the plastic.  In the blurrier picture above, you can see the front a little better. Next week, I should be able to sneak it out of the attic and unwrap it and get better pictures.
