standing ashtray era?

Anyone able to put a time period on this? Found at a yard sale. Has an amber ashtray that goes in the top area.

Probably 60s, the height of smoking and amber!

I attached a pic. The ashtray I say is Amber but it is really dark like cola colored. I don't have a pic of it and it is still in the trunk. I will try to do some photo bucket pics.

I have two of these. Mart is right your missing the glass ashtray. This is common because they usually got broken. I \have a friend that restored them and gave me two as a gift. She told me she had to hunt down the glass ashtrays.

So best estimate of the era is 30's? Also so I got it for cheap should I keep as is or restore?

That would be my opinion,, 30`s !!  You can try polishing the metal !!  It would be nice shined up !! This one is a pretty common type so I don`t think you are trashing it by restoring it into something that looks nice !!

I would say late 30's to early 40's....but that is like splitting hairs here.

Thanks for all the help! My wife and I buy mostly glass and furniture. Occasionally I find other interests. So for 5 bucks I felt interested.

I have a similar looking one. Sort of.

Mine is wood, and about a foot shorter. But I like it, it makes a nice table for my keys! Mine is from the 1940s.

I have one very similar to yours. It had belonged to my grandparents. When they had it the finish was polished metal but through the years it got a little rough looking. I know that they bought it new in the early to mid 40's. Maybe yours is from the same time period. I don't think these ashtrays are really worth much but they look great painted (which is what I did with mine). Value is subjective though. You might come across a collector who will make you a good offer.

I couldn't find a mention of what metal the O.P.'s smoking stand is made of.  It appears to be stamped sheet metal.  The one pictured below came from my grandmother's house and my mother said my grandmother purchased it sometime between 1927 and 1931.  My mother was going to give it to Goodwill.  It had a heavy coat of aluminum paint on it.  I took it and after hours with a mild brass wheel found it was wrought iron.  The smaller brass ash tray came from my stepdad's grandfather's old home in Illinois.  Maybe some here can place a date on it.  It has the "snuffer" on the side where you put the lighted end of a cigarette in it and push the plunger down and extinguish the butt.  I couldn't find an original glass ash tray so I use the smaller ash tray to fill in the space.
