Black Baby Composition Doll 1940s
« on: April 27, 2012, 07:18:28 pm »
Hi there. I've looked everywhere online and can't seem to identify this baby doll. Its 12" and I'm assuming its late 40's early 50's, and the body is tan, not Caucasian.
Anyone know what it is?
Thanks

Head, arms appear older than that !! Can you take the dress off so we can see body construction !!  Looks like a put together doll from two different ones !!

Definitely appears older to me as well.  Does the dress come off?  If so take a pic with it off please!  (Not trying to be perverse!  LOL)

here is the front and back of black doll naked/
she is stuffed with a combo of felt and what looks like hair on arms and coarse sawdust type material on the bottom part of body, secured with wire pins on the leg area.

I am going with what I said above,, the doll is older than 40`s and depending on what its made of,,possibly a good deal older !! I think original body either was damaged beyond repair or these were found items and just put together from what was on hand !!~  Body is way out of scale for the head and other parts so pretty sure it is home made !! Hair stuffing may be horse hair !! Was looking at the stitching on the top pics and dress appears home made as well as hand sewn Could be that this is a depression era doll when people just had no money to spend on such !! I really think the head pre dates the depression !! At least thats my 2 cents worth !!

Another 2 cents here - it appears as if the head of the doll in question is terracotta ... is this so , wolfhouse ?

You might look into Berry & Ross as a maker. They were a company owned wholly by minority Americans that specialized in composition black dolls starting prior to 1920. In my opinion, your doll (at least the head) would date back to the 1920's.

I would think that your piece is older as well.  Really needs a hands on inspection from someone in the know!

These can go for $$$.
