Antique (?) Chair
« on: May 16, 2012, 10:59:29 am »
Any thoughts on this chair would be much appreciated. I inherited it from my mother, who will probably have bought it at an auction in England, for not too much money. It's 33 inches high and about 20 inches at its widest.

The wide back and comparatively short legs makes it look like a nursing chair to me.
IE for a mother (or even a wet-nurse) to sit down and breast feed a baby.
They usually have casters though, and yours doesn't. Maybe someone just cut the bottom of the legs off !!

It's been re-upholstered, not by a professional (sorry to be blunt), but I think it has a bit of age to it.
If pushed, I'd guess Edwardian.

Could be a nursing chair or a vanity chair which would be my first guess !!  Looks a bit straight backed for a nursing chair !! And one thing a mother would want is comfort when nursing !!  Rouging the cheeks and combing hair requires less,,comfort !!
