Old wooden carved masks [Images updated]
« on: June 16, 2012, 08:15:06 pm »
Found these two last week, I'm not sure whether there worth anything or even who made them. I would guess there from Africa? The one with the rooster on the head has holes around the sides, im guessing to hang them or to put them on your face. Couldn't find any hallmarks or signatures, any feedback would be appreciated.

They do appear to be Afrrcan in origin.  It looks like they were carved by the same artist and I bet there is a story there.  I have only one which was given to me by a Salvadoran businessman ten or twelve years ago.  I will try to get a picture taken and post it this afternoon.  It is signed, the name escapes me at this moment.

Here are the pics of the one given to me by the Salvadoran man in around 1997 or 8.  The maker's sig is "Ciro".  He told me that Ciro has made wooden masks for a long time in El Salvador and is now (at that time) in his 90's and still making masks.  He also gave my older son a mask of a skull and gave my younger son six masks of assorted subjects and one or two resemble the ones you posted.  Although mine is definitely of a Latino male, others of his work are of other genders, African, Asian and Caucasian.  Also there is no evidence of electrical tools being used in the carving of both yours and mine,  looks like wood chisels and scrapers only.

They do look like they have some resemblance, i couldn't find any hallmarks or signatures on these, do you think there is any worth to these masks? Also is there a way to get in contact with the guy who sold those to you?

I lost contact with the Salvadoran who gave me the mask. Have tried without success.  I have wondered about the value of mine but never pursued the subject.  I think you may search on Ebay under "carved wooden masks" and find something similar, counting only the completed auctions (sold) for a comparative price.
