Some kind of rolling pin or weapon???
« on: June 28, 2012, 12:06:27 am »
Okay, so its unlikely that its a weapon but I still wonder, what is it? I figured if anyone would know, it might be y'all. On the butt of the handle there's a strange circular engraving with what looks to be a crosshair over that. The other end is actually pushed in, like a cup, and its carved on the handle to fit a hand. Resembles a baseball bat almost. Any info would be excellent! Thanks.

Probably used with a meat grinder to push the product into the grinder while keeping your fingers nice and safe.

I had one similar that came with a set of wooden kitchen tools !!  This could have been Amish made since its unfinished and utilitarian !!  Crosshairs is where it was centered on the lathe, the round mark is from the lathe !! Many uses for it,, breaking shells on dried beans and other veggies when saving seed, crushing fruit for jam ect !!  I am sure whoever made it had a particular use for it !!

This is a multifunctional tool that has been used for decades in kitchens!!!!  If you search vintage wooden masher you will finds LOTS of them.  However that wasn't it's only use....it was great at breaking (like mart put), flattening and tenderizing.  It also served as a sort of "bisquit cutter" when dough was rolled out!  I still have them and prefer the unfinished ones!!!  If you get them painted - you run the risk of paint chipping off into your food.

Cannot date this because they are so widely used and oils/use over the years can make even one that is only 30 years old look older.

Great usage or knick knack piece!!!

Here's mine I posted a while back, it's by Union Porcelain works, and dates to 1877 by the logo. I agree, GA's masher is cool!
