Help with antique Jaeger portable tachometer please!
« on: July 13, 2012, 12:46:30 pm »
Hey guys happened to be out yard saling today and i came across a 1951 jaeger portable tachometer. Comes with original box which on the top says jaeger manufacturing co, new york but it is pretty dirty and you cant really see it. Inside the box it is missing one piece. Also in the box is the original jaeger instructions paper, and a paper that says US air forces tachometer. OCAMA type-4050A    Serial number 9366.    Date 6/9/51. Also has a couple different initials of inspectors on it. Was just looking for any information on it as i could not find that much online and also wandering what it might be worth. Any help would be appreciated! thanks guys.

I'd say marts' suggestion might be best , regarding reselling such an item .

A&P mechanics might want to have such an item , but for display only .

These types of tachometers are regarded as unsafe , in modern times , as it requires a mechanic to actually hand-hold the tach & make the tool come into physical contact with spinning (& sometimes dangerous) shafts , sheaves & such .

Such tools are required to be regularly inspected & certfied , in the event someone wishes to use them on ANY aircraft application !

If indeed you intend to resell this item , I'd strongly suggest that you advertise it as a 'wall-hanger' (so to speak) only .

The parts within these mechanical tachs do wear & replacement parts are rare as can be .

After all that being said , I think it's a cool little surplus (non-antique) item , beagler15 !
