Furniture multiple posts
« on: July 13, 2012, 07:42:00 pm »
My very first post explained that I finally made it to storage to take pics and inventory.  That post seems to be lost in cyberspace but in any case I had nothing to clean these pieces with and they have been stored for a while.  So excuse the dust and cobwebs  LOL  please.

I won't repost the first piece of furniture yet in case it shows up.

I will post this dresser for now.
Dresser is on wheels and has 2 small top drawers and 3 full drawers.  Measures 20" deep, 39 1/2" tall and 36 1/2" wide.  The mirror is 31" tall and 36" at the base.

Again, I don't know anything about furniture - not about types of wood or style, time frame for manufacturing and value so any information is always appreciated.

I am just wondering, even though this is a less expensive line, what might this dresser go for?

Thanks again!!!

About the same price here !! Some of the simpler pieces do better than the more ornate ones with heavy carving !!

Ok then one more question - what is the best way to clean and shine up these old pieces?  I have always wiped with a damp cloth and Murphy's Oil Soap.  Then I would use some Old English.  Should I be using those products?

Murphy`s is ok as long as its diluted pretty much !! It tends to leave a film if you don`t !!  But diluted its fine for cleaning then let dry well and apply the Old English,,dark or lemon depending on the wood !!

I beg to differ on the Old English. All of those polishes also have a stain that will artificially darken the finish over time while making it look nice and "shiny" in the short run.

I recommend Howard Feed and Wax, or any similar product. Howard has beeswax and orange oil that really nurtures the wood. You only have to apply it once a year at the most. It really helps preserve the wood over the long haul. Between times all you need is a very slightly damp cloth to keep the dust off.

It doesn't have to be Howard, but I've had excellent results with it. Worth tracking down!!

If this was a dresser that he wanted to keep I would agree on a different product, or would have told a mix that I made and used when I was restoring furniture !!  But this is an inexpensive, dresser that has a finish, likely an old varnish, so feeding the wood might be a problem !!  His main interest is cleaning it, making it look as good as possible for sale without spending much !!

I'm sure he'll do as you suggested.

My .02, and a chance to throw a good product out there for future reference.
